Both the articles that were assigned to us to read were related
to food insecurity in India. However, both the writers have fairly different
views on them. In the article written by Madhura Swaminathan in 2001, she
accuses the government of being corrupted. She has an informative article with
adequate statistics given. According to Swaminathan the government is holding
back the food that was supposed to be given to the people under the poverty
line. Instead of distributing the food they sell them to foreign countries in
order to gain some extra money.
The second article, which is written by Biraj Swain in 2012,
deals more with human rights. According to her the people who face food
insecurity are also deprived of their human rights since every human has a
right to live. She thinks that the state governments need to be more
transparent about the distribution of the food, that the media should be more
active about this situation and there should be gender equality in the society.
Her article is persuasive since her tone encourages people to fight for their
basic rights themselves instead of waiting for someone else to do it.
The two articles have different views about the same problem
in the same country because of the difference in the time they were written at.
They have a gap of 11 years and by 2012 the government had already accepted
that they were responsible to feed the people who are facing food insecurity.
The implementation of it, however, was a problem.
